Sure I.B.M. is smaller. So what?

Steve Ballmer’s critique last week of I.B.M. got the attention of I.B.M.’s top executives. They took exception to the Microsoft chief executive’s statement

I.B.M. is the company that is notable for going the other direction. I.B.M.’s footprint is more narrow today than it was when I started. I am not sure that has been to the long-term benefit of their shareholders.

I.B.M.’s chief executive, Samuel J. Palmisano, on Friday went out of his way to reply, if ever so obliquely.
