University of Wisconsin IT project will cost $81 million through 2012

The University of Wisconsin System plans to spend $81.4 million to implement a more efficient payroll and benefits computer system, with the majority going to outside consultants, officials said Wednesday.
UW System President Kevin Reilly gave lawmakers the price tag and a projected completion date of 2012 for one of the most complicated information technology projects in state history.
Reilly said the new program is critical to track and pay 67,000 employees, replacing hundreds of systems at 26 UW campuses and other work sites that he said are at risk of failing. He said the program would give employees direct access to payroll information, better protect sensitive personal data and produce more accurate information about the state’s largest work force.
