EMC wins data domain with a $2.4 billion offer

Waving $2.4 billion in cash, EMC finally beat out NetApp, its archrival in the storage business, for the right to acquire Data Domain and its data deduplication technology. On Wednesday, NetApp dropped out of the bidding, and Data Domain’s board approved EMC’s offer.
Even in the jargon-filled world of technology nomenclature, deduplication is a chunky term. Its promise, however, is straightforward enough: the technology can reduce a company’s need for costly computer storage systems by half or more.
