01 May Google's Schmidt, Microsoft's Mundie named Obama tech advisers
President Obama today named high-tech heavyweights Eric Schmidt of Google and Craig Mundie of Microsoft as technology advisers. The two will join academic scholars, researchers, and business leaders in the sciences as part of Obama’s Science and Technology Advisory Council, the administration announced.
“The council represents leaders from many scientific disciplines who will bring a diversity of experience and views,” Obama said in a statement.
The council will be led by John Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Eric Lander, direct of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Lander was a leader of the Human Genome Project. Also leading the council is Harold Varmus, president and CEO of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Google Chief Executive Schmidt was an early supporter and donor of Obama and helped on the campaign and transition with technology policy. Mundie is Microsoft’s chief research and strategy officer.
