This is a question everyone seems to ask. The first step is licensing. You would contact the local Commissioner of Revenue’s Office or your local Town Office and ask about licensing a business. They have the required forms that have to complete to get a license and of course there is a fee. This fee is based on annual sales. For the first year, you really do not know what the annual sales will be so you can estimate annual sales. They have a minimum sales amount already and it is best to keep the first years estimate at the minimum.
Normally, the fee is somewhere around $30.00 – $50.00 depending on where you are located. They will ask you when you go to apply for a license for a business name, or a fictitious name. Your license, at first should state your name, DBA (doing business as), and the name you have picked for the company. You can check your business name with your State Corporation Commission to see if anyone else has used this name. As long as your business name is not in use or in good standing with the State Corporation Commission you can use that name.
