IT companies play defense in a tight economy

MANILA, Philippines – IT companies, it seems, have something to learn about sports.
Gene Phifer, managing VP of Gartner, told journalists in a recent media briefing at the sidelines of IBM’s Lotusphere conference, that a lot of companies will “bunker in” considering the severe financial implications of the economic crisis.
Bunkering in, he explained, is like playing defense in football. You fortify your defenses against market forces or factors by consolidating cash flow or company resources and making cautious decisions on company purchases or expansion.
“Some companies will do that,” he said. There are several sectors that will really bunker in because of decline in consumer spending such as retail, electronics, housing mortgage, and the auto industry.
