06 Feb HIT and the economic stimulus bill
On January 28th, with absolutely blazing speed and alacrity, particularly by Washington standards, the House of Representatives passed their version of the economic stimulus package, the cornerstone of President Obama’s economic policy. The final vote was 244 to 188. Not a single Republican voted for the bill, while 11 Democrats voted against it. This week, the Senate took up the bill and floor debate is expected to begin very soon. Consistent with the principals outlined in President Obama’s campaign, transition and inauguration speeches, the House bill provides significant monies for technology-oriented initiatives in two key areas: broadband network infrastructure and health IT.
