31 Jul Small Tree branches out with affordable video
Chippewa Valley, Wis. – A new combination of technical solutions could enhance the capacity of artists and editors in publishing, broadcasting, and graphic design to transfer high-definition video and other large volumes of uncompressed data.
The joint solution promises Apple Mac OS X users in these creative-content industries an affordable network connection that would reduce the time demand for specialized data transfer tasks.
The solution, spawned by a partnership between local networking and storage solution firm, Small Tree Communications, and end-to-end switching and routing solutions provider, Foundry Networks, utilizes Small Tree’s multi-port network interface cards and file system software and Foundry’s FastIron Ethernet switches.
“Moving large files fast is what it’s all about. It allows you to get work done faster,” said Corky Seeber, president of Small Tree.
A typical Small Tree customer is a graphic arts design shop with anywhere from two to 10 Apple client workstations and one or two file servers, Seeber indicated. These small businesses need increased performance for demanding tasks like streaming uncompressed video using Final Cut Pro, but they are often constrained by a workgroup budget.
Seeber said the solution will allow Small Tree to expand its market presence by supplying a higher performance product at a price-point that more people can adopt. Currently, a complete point-to-point 10-gigabit solution is still price-prohibitive for a small shop, Seeber said, but the combination of multiple multi-port gigabit Ethernet (GbE) connections and multiple 10GbE uplinks to file servers with Foundry’s switch can reduce that cost.
Foundry, headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif., offers enterprise and service provider switching, routing, application traffic management, and network wide security solutions.
Small Tree provides peripheral, Apple-based enterprise products, including high bandwidth server solutions for the Apple Mac OS X platform.
