19 Apr Third Wave announces two senior management appointments
Madison, Wis. — Third Wave Technologies, Inc. has added two executives to its senior management team, including an attorney that helped litigate Third Wave’s successful patent infringement suit against Stratagene Corp.
The company also announced that it would host a conference call on Tuesday, April 25, during which it will report its first quarter earnings.
Third Wave, which develops and markets molecular diagnostic reagents, said Tuesday that Cindy S. Ahn has been appointed vice president and general counsel. She previously worked for the Kirkland & Ellis law firm, where she was a partner and key member of the team that successfully litigated Third Wave’s patent infringement suit against Stratagene Corp. The suit resulted in a $20.1 million award to Third Wave.
Prior to entering law school, Ahn served as a technician at Abbott Laboratories. She earned a bachelor of science degree in biology at the University of Illinois and a law degree from American University’s Washington College of Law.
Meanwhile, Jorge A. Garces, Ph.D., has been appointed vice president of product and platform development. Garces joined Third Wave in October 2005 as executive director of clinical development. Prior to joining Third Wave, he served as director of molecular research and development at Genzyme Genetics.
Garces earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Brooklyn College and his doctorate in cell and molecular biology from the City University of New York. He completed his post-doctoral training at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

To accelerate the development of Third Wave’s personalized genetic tests for diseases such as hepatitis, and to advance market penetration into Asian markets, the company recently announced a new partnership with Mitsubishi Corp. in which Mitsubishi and another firm will invest $5 million in Third Wave Japan, a unit of Third Wave Technologies. With this infusion of capital, Mitsubishi will gain a 14 percent ownership of Third Wave Japan, and CSK Holdings Corp. will gain about 3 percent ownership.
