09 Mar Fond du Lac County tracks cell phones in emergencies
Fond du Lac County can now pinpoint the locations of cell-phone users when they call 911, making it just the second county in Wisconsin to install the necessary equipment.
The system has been in place for about six weeks and has already been field-tested, according to The Reporter.
In one case, the newspaper reported, an intoxicated man called in and was found 50 feet from the location the system had tracked him to.
A separate article reported that the state will reimburse the county for at least some of the $1.7 million it took to upgrade dispatch equipment..
The first county to add this capability to its emergency dispatch centers was Waukesha.
