As the rush around meaningful use slows, the next push will be to ensure providers are fully utilizing the technology that’s available to them, according to Eric Helsher, executive director of Epic’s Clinical Adoption Program.
“That’s the next race,” said Helsher, who spoke Wednesday at the 2014 Digital Healthcare Conference.
Wisconsin Medical Society CEO Rick Abrams, who attended Wednesday’s discussion, said physicians are frustrated because they are not always brought into the process to figure out how the tools they are given can best be used to make the patient relationship better and more efficient.
“In this wonderful experiment, we are losing the people that are providing the care,” he said.
Helsher highlighted a provider in California that has hardwired the “Choosing Wisely” appropriate use criteria into its Epic record. He said Epic is learning more about its experience to see if it’s something that can be shared with other members of its community.
“The future will require all systems to do something similar in the future,” Helsher said.
